Death: Our Graduation Day

I wrote this poem to be read at my Grandfather's funeral. He always spoke of death as a Graduation Day. I wanted to honor him at the service.

Today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.

We realize that he has gone to see the Father.

He only joins us here in spirit today.

He would want us to know that he is somewhere greater.

Today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.

We’ll miss his kind words and prayers during his life.

We’ll miss his bass voice at church on Sunday.

And we’ll miss his positive attitude in the midst of strife.

Today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.

We’ll miss his encouragement and strength in weakness.

We’ll miss his humor, hugs, and smiles along life’s way.

And we’ll miss the power of his love and forgiveness.

Today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.

We’ll miss his teaching, visiting, and counseling.

We’ll miss his refreshing spirit when we are in disarray.

And we’ll never replace his ability to comfort the hurting.

Today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.

His presence joins us here but not to say goodbye.

Instead he hopes you will find your way.

He wants you to seek the Father, as he did, before you die.

He would want you to know that he loves you all.

There is no need to cry or weep, come what may.

There is hope in the arms of Jesus so we should stand tall.

Because today we celebrate Jim Green’s Graduation Day.
