Making The Assembly A Priority: Why Attending Church Services Matters

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to let things slip. Our schedules fill up, demands pull us in every direction, and sometimes, attending church services can feel like just one more obligation. But what if it's not an obligation at all, but rather a vital source of strength, encouragement, and connection? God commands us to worship on the first day of every week for a reason  (Acts 2:42, 20:7). Attending church services is more than just a tradition or a "good thing to do." It's an essential part of a vibrant Christian life, offering benefits that extend far beyond the hour(s) we spend in a pew. Let's explore why making church attendance a priority.

#1 For Edifying Corporate Worship - One of the primary reasons we gather is to collectively worship God. There's something powerful about joining with other believers to lift up praises, observe communion, collect an offering, praying, studying, and humbling ourselves before our Creator. This corporate expression of faith magnifies God's glory and reminds us that we are part of something much larger than ourselves.Hebrews 12:28-29 says, "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may server God acceptably with reverence and godly fear; for our God is a consuming fire."

#2 For Stimulating Bible Study - The teaching of God's Word in  Bible class provides essential spiritual nourishment. A good study, rooted in Scripture, can illuminate truths, challenge our perspectives, offer comfort, and guide us in living a life pleasing to God. It's a time to be fed spiritually, to grow in our understanding, and to be transformed by the power of God's truth. Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

#3 For Encouraging Fellowship - Life can be tough, and we were never meant to go through it alone. The church provides a community of like-minded believers who can offer support, prayer, and encouragement. When we gather, we have the opportunity to share our burdens, celebrate our victories, and remind one another of God's faithfulness. This fellowship is a vital source of strength. Galatians 6:2 says,: "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." How can you do that if you neglect the assembly (Hebrews 10:24-25)?

#4 For Using Our Spiritual Gifts - Every believer is given spiritual gifts, and the church is the primary place where these gifts are meant to be exercised for the building up of the body (I Corinthians 12:27, Ephesians 4:11-16). Whether it's striving as a greeter, reading Scripture, teaching Bible class, serving communion, encouraging people, giving, sharing or any other gift, our presence and participation in the local church allows us to contribute to the greater good and see God work through us. Romans 12:4-5 says, "For as we have many members in one body, but all the same members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another." We must build one another up.

#5 For Accountability & Growth - Being part of a local church family provides a healthy level of accountability. When we are regularly exposed to God's Word and surrounded by other believers, we are more likely to be challenged in areas where we need to grow, to confess our sins, and to strive for holiness. Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend." We need each other!

In a world that constantly pulls us away from what truly matters, let's intentionally make church attendance a priority. It's not about checking a box. It’s about connecting with God, growing in our faith, and living in community with others who share our journey. The benefits are immeasurable, and the spiritual nourishment it provides is truly essential for flourishing in our walk with Christ.

For these reasons, and dozens more, make church services a priority. Meet at every opportunity. God commands it. You need it. We need it. Don’t neglect it.

You are loved.
